As the temperature begins to drop during cold Nebraska winter months, the anxieties of low-income residents rise over how to keep their families warm with increasing utility costs.
The federal low-income energy assistance program (LIHEAP) gives the State of Nebraska a tool to help low-income families keep their natural gas and electricity on.
In 2007, the State received $17.9 million. Of that total, $5.5 million was distributed to natural gas and electric customers in the Omaha metro area.
Besides the LIHEAP funds, Omaha area utilities have assistance programs to help our older and disabled neighbors.
From January-May 2007, the Metropolitan Utilities District's heat aid fund helped 567 households by distributing $165,060, an average of $291 per household.
- From January-May 2008, the fund helped 788 households with $263,908, an average of $322 per household.
In 2006, OPPD's energy assistance program helped 628 households, distributing $259,225, an average of $412 per household/
- In 2007, the program helped 907 households with $286,279, an average of $316 per household.
Your ongoing investment in local energy assistance programs will enable us to continue to effectively serve neighbors in need.
